Want to join me in saving our history? We are raising money to save the Captain William H. Moore Cabin that once sat in McDowell County. The McDowell County Historical Society has been given this wonderful gift from the past, and it is a treasure not to be lost. Any donation will help make an impact. We have a deadline of September 30th, 2022. We need to raise funds for Phase I of this bigger-than-life project, which would be taking down the building, transporting it back to McDowell County, NC and storing it until we can begin Phase II. Phase II includes the reconstruction of the cabin in its new homeplace. Our fundraising GOAL for Phase I is $40,000.00, and we have a commitment of $10,000.00. So, we are on our way! We ask everyone to join us in preserving this cabin for future generations. Thanks in advance for contributing to this cause; that means so much to our community and us.
William H. Moore was born in Ulster, Northern Ireland, around 1726. His Father and Grandfather had lost their lives fighting in the Irish war between the Catholics and Protestants. To escape the religious persecution and fighting, he came to this country with 8 of his brothers in 1739 or 1741 at the age of 13.
According to records, they all came through Philadelphia initially and settled in Orange County and Augusta County, VA. The Militia
Muster Rolls of 1742 listed all but 3 of the brothers as serving at that time.
William, at 16, was one listed as serving.
As time marched on, the brothers scattered throughout the new land. William migrated south to Rowan County in 1746, NC, along the “Great Wagon Road.” He married his first wife, Ann Cathey (daughter of George Cathey), and they had six children, the last born in 1782. His home was in the South Muddy Creek area in an area called Dysartsville. It is believed he was briefly married to a sister of General Griffith Rutherford, but no records to verify this have been found; this may have been after Ann’s death after
1782. There is a record of his marriage to Margaret
Patton, (daughter of Benjamin Patton) in 1784. They also had six children.
